"We condemn the irresponsible and insulting statement of Pia Cayetano in Harapan stating that she will increase the salary of nurses and teachers its because they are college graduate, compared to soldiers who are just high school graduate and yet receiving high compensation - Soldiers stand no vote to Pia Cayetano" (this is the original text message that I received)- After a few comments from concerned citizens, a link to the actual program Hiritan (not Harapan) was found.
Senatoriables on HiritanThis lines of condemnation is currently circulating around the nation via cellular phone and probably in a few minutes it will also storm the internet. If these lines are true, then such claims and differentiation of Ms. Pia Cayetano between public servants of this nations is really a irresponsible and immature. Considering the fact that not all Soldiers are undergraduate or uneducated! Considering the fact that the hazards most of these
military men faced! Considering the fact that the education of a man does not solely rely on his academic achievements! Considering the fact that schools wrongly segregate their students by basing only on their academic intelligence (because according to research there are about 30 kinds of intelligence)! Considering the fact that most of these soldiers were and are and will serve this country to their last breath! Considering the fact that these men were played all along by some corrupt political and military leaders! If Ms. Pia Cayetano is one of these soldiers, will she be happy of hearing her on statement? Will she be happy after having a torn family because of serving this country? Will she be happy after having a amputated limb because of defending the Philippine Constitution? Will she be happy after having a psychological breakdown after seeing her comrade die in front of her? Will she be happy after seeing his headless comrade because of defending this country's territory? Will she be happy after seeing her son in a box because he refused to surrender her sworn duty? Will she be happy....!
Serving this corrupted nation has nothing to do with which profession you might be. And it is not a matter of compensation that weights their service! Ms. Pia Cayetano demoralized a foundation of this country that strengthened her freedom since colonial era!
"Not all teachers and nurses are soldiers! But amidst the Rooster of Troops is a soldier or a nurse, who decided to serve their country by enlisting into the Armed Forces of the Philippines!"
Ms. Pia Cayetano, While the complexity of political erand is on your hand. The complexity of political warfare and the battle between life and death is between a soldier with a gun and his will to obey his sworn duty! They were soldiers! Are you?

SEN PIA: Thank you po sa katanungan na yan Tita Sonia …doon ho sa 14th Congress, pinaglaban ko po sa salary standardization law ang sweldo po ng teachers and nurses… kasi may discrimination diyan against women…ang mga profession na dominated by women laging mas mababa ang sweldo…college graduate sila pero ang antas ng kanilang sweldo kapareho lang ng graduate sa high school na mga sundalo…so I have been already fighting for that…on record yon… natalo ho ako sa botohan… ang nagawa ko lang taasan yong sweldo ng teachers ng sciences and math… so I promise, because I have been doing it na, uunti-untihin ko ito dahil talagang mababa ang sweldo nila…saan manggagaling? We have unprogrammed funds…more than hundred billion…119 nineteen billion ang unprogrammed funds…56 billion from the mobile vehicle fund na walang destino…na hindi natin alam kung sann ginagamit…madalin hong gamitin yon…pinaglaban ko din yan sa budget hearing na ilipat yan sa defined programs of education and health." unquote.
I think such episode was abused by onlookers that are anti Pia....
SONIA ROCO: Senadora Pia, gusto ko lang malaman kung mayroon ka talagang nakahanda na plataporma ngayon kung sakaling maibalik ka sa senado, para sa edukasyon lalong lalo na yon ating mga guro.

In this exchange, please note:
1. There is nothing in Sen. Pia's statement that would suggest she is advocating that our soldiers should be paid less.
2. The thrust of her response was to offset the discrimination against professional women in the civil service and seek an increase in their salaries.
3. Underscoring the discrimination by government, she merely inferred that professional soldiers who didn’t finish college are better off because they get equal, if not better pay than the women in professional sectors who are required to have college degrees. Nothing in it suggests soldiers should be paid less; only that teachers and nurses should be paid commensurately for their education.
The Senator sympathizes with the plight of our Filipino soldiers for their daily sacrifices and heroism. Taking off from that premise, the Senator has nothing but the highest respect for our men and women in uniform. In fact, in past budget hearings in the Senate, she and her brother, Senator Alan Cayetano, had proposed among others, that soldiers, regardless of rank, who die in action or are permanently disabled on duty must continue to receive their salaries until they reach the retirement age of 56, even while their children get scholarships in state universities and colleges. Unfortunately, they did not get enough support for the passage og such measure, but they vowed to pursue this for our soldier-heroes in the coming 15th Congress.
Senator Pia Cayetano has consistently fought for the welfare and recognition of our government personnel, including our teachers, health professionals and soldiers -- all of whom play their own crucial roles in society. She will never allow detractors from derailing her goal of making the government fully accountable for their duties and responsibilities to our people.
Sincerely,
ERMIN F. GARCIA, Jr.
Chief of Staff

Omnibus response to spam texts and emails on Sen. Pia’s alleged anti-soldier remarks
On behalf of Senator Pia Cayetano, I wish to clarify the malicious allegations being raised in anonymous spam texts and e-mails being circulated recently to criticize the Senator Cayetano’s alleged anti-soldier remarks on “Harapan” (an evening show on ABS-CBN that features national candidates).
First, allow us to correct a factual error in these spam texts/emails that have sadly led some people to read and interpret the good senator’s statement out of context. No, the senator has never appeared on ABS-CBN’s “Harapan.” But she did guest on the “Hiritan 2010” segment of “Unang Hirit” (GMA7 morning show) last April 16. Obviously, those circulating the spam texts and emails never even bothered to check their facts, and in all likelihood, might not even have personally seen or heard Sen. Cayetano on Hiritan (which can readily be reviewed on gmanews.tv if they missed watching the live airing). Still, her detractors proceeded to unfairly castigate the senator.
What’s even worse is when these spammers even paraphrased portions of the Senator's full statement to make it appear that she maligned “our soldiers just because they are high school graduates only and they should be paid less.”
(Part 1 of 2)
My father died in service for this country as a soldier, he was at the brim of his profession and was assigned as a peace keeping unit between the GRP and the Muslim Rebel Returnees, a close friend of mine died in service just a few months after his graduation, a good neighbor of ours died in service in the midst of his service for this country, and many more others who wore their uniform to stand against oppression.
All these soldiers died probably with a moral cost or where just sacrificial lambs by corrupt officers and politicians. But one thing is clear they have serve this country well but are not treated well. They don't have equal level of education but the level of their service is far more greater than anyone's academic achievements.
With due respect to all parties involved who have laid their eyes and heart on this issue. Let the resolution of this issue be on their hands.
Thanks for updating us on all the new comments coming in your blog. Unfortunately, we can't convince everyone. But for the record, we reiterate the fact that in the "Hiritan" (not "Harapan," as the negative texters wrongly insist) where she guested last April 16, Sen. Pia Cayetano NEVER belittled our soldiers, nor called for the diminution of their salaries. This has been clarified in her many TV and radio interviews, as well as the text and email messages we have been sending out to concerned parties (including this blog) who want to be clarified on the issue.
Everyone is invited to check the Senate records and even visit the Senate in the coming 2011 budget hearings in the 15th Congress to see what Sen Pia has been consistently fighting for: Higher salary grades for our government nurses and public school teachers, as well as increasing benefits for widows and children of soldiers and other men in uniform who die in the line of duty. She was actually outvoted in both respects during the 2010 budget deliberations, but she is determined to continue this advocacy into the 15th Congress - hopefully with your support.
